Three Books, Not One

Most poodle genetics content online is a single article or a single locus. It answers one question and stops. The Poodle Genetics Lab book series exists because breeding decisions rarely stop at one question: a single litter can raise a color question, a merle-risk question, and a hip-screening question all at once, and a 1,500-word article was never going to hold all three.

So the series is three volumes instead of one book, split by subject rather than by difficulty: Volume I covers coat color inheritance, Volume II covers merle and dilution genetics specifically, and Volume III covers inherited health and structure. Each is referenced against the current peer-reviewed literature and can be read on its own — you don't need Volume I to understand Volume III.

Volume I: Poodle Color Genetics

This is the flagship reference: the most comprehensive single book on poodle coat color inheritance available, covering the E, K, A, B, D, S, M, G, I, and R loci with reference plates and inheritance tables throughout. The ten chapters move from foundational genetics through each locus in turn, then close with a chapter on interpreting DNA test results and building an actual breeding plan around them, plus a full reference-chart and color-gallery appendix.

Volume II: Advanced Poodle Genetics — Merle and Dilution

Volume II exists because merle deserves more than a chapter. It's the complete science of the M locus: the seven-allele merle classification system, the six-tier merle risk framework and pairing matrix, how to interpret a DNA report that comes back mosaic, and why white coverage is not a reliable predictor of how "loud" a merle actually is. A full section covers dilution genetics separately, including the d1/d2/d3 compound-heterozygosity model behind true blue and lilac, how to tell those apart from the G-locus greying route that produces look-alike silver and café-au-lait coats, and an honest look at the current evidence limits around color dilution alopecia.

It also does something most merle content won't: it addresses merle's disputed, still-unresolved origin in poodles directly, rather than repeating an assumed history as settled fact.

Volume III: Poodle Health & Structural Genetics

The largest volume in the series, and the one most breeders eventually need. It opens with a molecular genetics primer and a chapter on reading inheritance patterns through actual poodle pedigrees, then moves into skeletal structure and growth across all three poodle sizes — proportion, angulation, movement, growth-plate timing, and where structural faults genuinely trace back to genetics versus development or environment.

The bulk of the book is inherited disease, referenced against the current literature with the same rigor as Volume I: hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, degenerative myelopathy, von Willebrand disease, Addison's disease, sebaceous adenitis, cancer risk, and longevity. One chapter addresses behavior genetics specifically, and the closing chapters cover reproductive genetics and work through evidence-based breeding case studies end to end.

Which Volume Do You Actually Need?

  • You only care about coat color outcomes: start with Volume I. It stands alone.
  • You're breeding, or considering breeding, a merle or dilute: Volume II isn't optional. Double-merle risk is not something to learn after the fact.
  • You're running a breeding program that screens for health and structure: Volume III is the one that will get the most use, and it doesn't require the other two first.
  • You're building a serious, multi-generation breeding program: most breeders who buy one volume come back for the other two within a year. The complete series is priced for that.

None of this locks you in. Each volume stands alone regardless of which one you buy first — the table above is about urgency, not sequence. A merle pairing on the calendar next month outranks a color question that can wait, even though Volume I is numbered first.

The Complete Poodle Genetics Series bundles all three PDFs for $99 — a $35.97 saving over buying them one at a time — though the bundle is PDF-only; there's no combined paperback edition. How the Series Fits With PGL's Other Tools

Common Questions

Do I need to read them in order? No. Each volume is written to stand alone. Most readers start with whichever subject their current breeding question is actually about.

Are these written for breeders, or for pet owners too? The series is written for breeders — the depth and the breeding-decision framing assume that context. Owners who want the genetics behind their own dog's coat without the breeding-program angle are usually better served by the Owner's Guide or the free genetics guide articles.

PDF or paperback — what's the actual difference? Same content. The PDF is instant and searchable; the paperback is a physical reference copy. The complete-series bundle is PDF-only.

How current is the science? Each volume is referenced against the current peer-reviewed literature at time of writing, the same standard applied across every PGL resource.
