DNA Testing for Poodles

What a panel can and can’t tell you, which markers are worth testing, and where to test — from someone with no reason to sell you more testing than the evidence supports.

What DNA testing actually does — and doesn't

A DNA panel reads specific, known variants. For a poodle that makes it excellent at two jobs: telling you the coat-colour genotype at the tested loci, and telling you the carrier status of the inherited diseases it screens for. Used before a pairing, it turns guesswork into arithmetic — which is exactly what the colour calculator does with the results.

It is not a crystal ball. A panel cannot read a trait it has no marker for, and several things that matter in poodles are exactly that — which is why the honest sections of this page are the ones about what a test won’t tell you.

What's worth testing in a poodle

Colour — the loci this site’s calculator models are all directly testable:

  • E (Extension), B (Brown), K (Dominant Black / brindle), D (Dilution), and the S (parti) and R (roan/ticking) loci.
  • The M (Merle) locus — including its length class, which a colour swab alone won’t give you. If merle is anywhere in a pedigree, test it before breeding, full stop.

Health — a breed-appropriate panel is the point of testing. Which conditions matter depends on your variety; see health testing by variety for the specifics. Two worth reading before you over-react to a result:

  • The CDDY / IVDD result — real, but frequently over-interpreted.
  • An ALT / copper variant on an Embark report — often a favourable result, not a reason to cull a dog.

A CLIA-accredited lab that leans clinical. If you want a specific disease result confirmed to a diagnostic standard rather than a broad consumer panel, this is the one — often used to re-confirm a surprising result.

Best for: individual loci and academic-grade coat tests

No affiliate here — it's a university lab. Excellent for individual coat-colour tests and a trusted name, though it is à la carte rather than one broad panel. Note its furnishings/coat notation trips people up; we cover that quirk in the guides.

What no DNA test can tell you

This is where a lot of money gets spent chasing an answer a swab cannot give. In poodles specifically:

  • Red-spectrum shade (how red vs. apricot vs. cream) is polygenic — no panel predicts it. Record what you see.
  • Progressive greying / silver has no validated DNA test. It’s read from the dog and its pedigree, not a lab report.
  • How much white a parti carries is shaped by modifiers no panel reads — spsp does not guarantee a matched pattern.
  • Whether a merle will express, and how strongly, depends on the exact insertion length, and a lone short allele may show nothing at all.

When the honest reading is “the test tells you little here,” that’s what we say — even on the page that earns a commission. That’s the whole point of buying from someone who reads the science.
