Why this dog is worth study

Prada is a phantom (black and tan) Miniature Poodle -- and her E-locus result tells a story her photo alone can't.

She's Em/Em: homozygous for the melanistic mask allele. On a lighter or higher-contrast base, Em can produce a visibly darker overlay across the muzzle and face. But Prada's base is black (she's at/at -- tan point -- on a black eumelanin base), and a black mask over black pigment has nothing to contrast against. It essentially never shows. You could see her every day and never guess she carries two copies of it.

The takeaway: Em/Em is a real, DNA-confirmed result, but on a black-based dog it is simply not a visual call -- high contrast (a red or apricot base, for example) is what lets a mask actually show at all, and even then it's inconsistent. This is exactly why PGL keeps genotype and phenotype as two separate columns, not one: some results only ever come from the test, never from the photo.
