Why this dog is worth study
By eye, Queen Esther is a parti: a mostly white Toy puppy with apricot patches. Her LABOKLIN report says two things the photo never could.
First, she is S/S at the S locus, the result that is supposed to mean no piebald white at all. That is not a lab error. The S-locus test reads one MITF piebald variant, and piebald is not the only route to white in Poodles. Her litter is the clue: littermates who are also S/S show true tuxedo markings, so Irish spotting is clearly running in this family. Esther's much larger white area is consistent with her carrying two copies of the Irish-spotting factor together with whitehead, the pattern that pushes white up over the head. Neither has a DNA test yet, so this is a reasoned reading of the litter, not a lab result, and it is exactly why a reviewed photograph belongs in this library. Second, underneath that red-spectrum coat she carries a dominant black allele (KB/ky) and two copies of the phantom haplotype (BB1/BB1), and neither one shows. She is e1/e1 at the E locus, two recessive-red alleles, which switch off black and brown pigment in the coat entirely. Everything the K and A loci would normally paint is still there in her DNA, just with nothing to paint on. Paired with a mate that contributes an E allele, some of her puppies could show exactly what she hides: solid black from her KB, or black-and-tan phantom from her BB1 haplotypes.
The one thing to remember: a color panel is a list of what the dog carries, not what it shows. Read the E locus first, because e/e (or e1/e1) decides whether any of the rest is visible. And an S/S result rules out piebald, not white.
